I was born in Edinburgh in the days when a lamplighter came around and lit the lamp outside our house and the organgrinder had a monkey in a coloured jacket perched on his cart. I was an only child and loved the various street activities. I used to stand in our hallway waiting for the postman, morning and afternoon, to pop some mail through the brass slit in the front door. My grandparents lived in Aberdeen and I often stayed with them and in fact started school there when I was four and a half. At five, my parents collected me and I started school back in Edinburgh. This only lasted about a year and my father was transferred to London for two years meaning I changed school again - twice - from the local school to a smaller one with a Scottish headmistress. We moved back to Edinburgh with me pleading unsuccessfully for a baby brother each birthday and Christmas but we did have two dogs! Three more schools with me never being exactly told why I was changed to a new school. I loved both lessons and games so that side was never a problem. In the years from nine to twelve I was left very free to go skating at the Haymarket Ice Rink, ride my bike with friends to the Forth bridge and go over and back on the ferry, slide in the snow on a tin tray down Arthur's Seat also I and my friends, unknown to our parents, used to play hide-and-seek in Edinburgh Castle. These pleasures ended when, aged twelve, I was sent to boarding school in St.Andrews, Fife
